Summer Science Camp Instructor, 2009

Youth Science Institute (YSI) is seeking Summer Science Camp instructors for the 2009 season.  We offer a variety of camps which include hiking, creek exploration, fishing, bird watching, physics and chemistry experiments, and crafts.  Camps are hands-on, experiential, and inquiry-based.  YSI has live animals, preserved specimens, laboratory and field studies equipment, and a knowledgeable staff to help you create an engaging and fun learning experience for children.  Curriculum and kit box are available for each camp.

Camps are one week long, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon or 1 p.m., and run from June 15th to August 14th.  The camps are held at our three nature centers in Santa Clara County - Alum Rock City Park in San Jose, Vasona County Park in Los Gatos, and Sanborn County Park in Saratoga.

Responsibilities

  • Attend orientation and training sessions

  • Read and understand camp curriculum

  • Prepare lesson plans to include experiments, crafts, hikes, and stories

  • Teach children in an engaging and enthusiastic manner

  • Insure the safety and well-being of children

  • Properly care for all teaching materials

  • Mentor and supervise camp aides

  • Properly complete all administrative paperwork

  • Exhibit maturity, diplomacy and common sense in working with parents, children, and staff

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to teach children grades pre-K through 6th

  • Degree in science, education or environmental studies preferred; or similar coursework is helpful

  • Excellence in the following skill areas:  Written, verbal and visual communication; planning and implementation; working independently, working collaboratively, and customer service

  • Self-motivated, flexible and energetic

  • Willingness to learn new skills

  • Personable individual who enjoys working with the public

  • Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds for short distances

  • Ability to sustain physical activity, such as hiking

  • Posses a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and have access to a car

  • Commitment to work a minimum of four weeks, with hiring preference given to qualified candidates who can commit to more than four weeks.

Terms of Employment

  • This is a seasonal position. 

  • Salary range is $12.00 - $14.00 per hour.

  • Any offer of employment is contingent upon finger printing, a background check, and TB test.  The finger printing and TB tests are done at the expense of the applicant.
