If you enjoy working with young people and inspiring them to pursue science and nature education and careers, please consider becoming a YSI volunteer. The rewards far exceed anything you might imagine. For over 60 years, volunteers have helped YSI teach more than 30,000 children per year.

Please email volunteer@ysi-ca.org for more information

YSI Volunteers help us achieve our mission every day.

  • Do you enjoy working with or on behalf of young people?

  • Do you want to support science and nature education that inspires children to learn more and be excited about science and nature?

  • Do you want to be part of educating the next generation of science and technology professionals, teachers, researchers, and critical thinkers?

  • Are you a Junior High or High School Student needing to earn community service hours while you learn cool things, explore career paths and enjoy nature, all while you help YSI?

If you answered yes to any of these, then become a YSI volunteer!

If you answered yes to any of these, then become a YSI volunteer!

You can volunteer for an hour, a day, a week, or longer. Minimum age for volunteers is 14 unless otherwise noted. Here's a sampling of some of our on-going opportunities.

Volunteer opportunities evolve all the time. To volunteer (even if you don't see something here for you) email us at: volunteer@ysi-ca.org.

This summer, give back to the community by committing to at least 3 weeks of Summer Science Camp Volunteer service! Help our Science Instructors prepare for their camps, while getting to know our wonderful YSI Volunteer Team.

The volunteer work involves taking directions and using initiative to complete given tasks. Volunteers will NOT be working directly with the campers. This is a great volunteering opportunity for folks that enjoy accomplishing attainable goals, being part of a team, and bonding with other volunteers.

Interested? Send your  Volunteer Application,  Volunteer Services Agreement, and SSC Availability Form to volunteer@ysi-ca.org or mel@ysi-ca.org

The deadline this year for applications is May 11, 2015.

Animal Care: Help us feed snakes, exercise turtles, and maintain our animals' homes.  Volunteers help Staff Curators feed and care for our educational ambassadors used in our programs. We welcome Junior Curators beginning at age 14 (Requires training and a longer-term commitment.)

Trail and Landscape Maintenance Volunteer: Help us to maintain our natural settings including our Native Plant Trail and garden areas. Work may include weeding, mulching, pruning, watering and soil preparation, depending on the season.

Special Events: Like coordinating the big picture or helping with the smaller details? Help is needed leading up to and on the day-of our Insect Fair in May and our Wildlife Festival in October. You can help with a single task, like preparing materials, or with a bigger piece of the puzzle, like coordinating the craft tables. Or you can volunteer for just a couple of hours at the event. Like to throw parties? We also hold special events for our donors each year.

Summer Science Camp Volunteer: Do you have some time this summer and enjoy hands-on activities like arts and crafts? Then come help us make our camps fun and educational for many area children. Camps are held at our Vasona Lake County Park location (Los Gatos). Camp volunteers help with camp set-up and clean-up and prepare a variety of materials for use in camp. Volunteers are asked to work a 2 hour daily shift either in the morning or the afternoon. Camps run weekly from June-August. A minimum commitment of three weeks is required, and the weeks do not have to be consecutive.
