Development Associate

The Development Associate supports all fund development activities at YSI. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys gathering and tracking details and is equally comfortable chatting with donors at special events. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in all aspects of nonprofit fundraising in a creative, small-team environment. This is an in-person position.

Classification:
Part-time/Non-exempt; 30 hours per week; 9:00am-3:30pm Monday – Friday; The Executive Director may require attendance of the Development Associate from time to time on weekends and evenings.

Salary Range:
$27-$30 per hour

Administrative Support for Fund Development (75%):

• Create and update donor and gift records in YSI’s database, eTapestry.
• Execute direct mail, stewardship, and major gift programs as outlined in the Annual Fund Development Plan.
• Manage the monthly or bi-monthly donor e-newsletter and produce donor thank you letters.
• Maintain donor/donation information on YSI website and donation software.
• Perform data imports into eTapestry from external databases.
• Create and maintain mailing lists from eTapestry for fundraising activities.
• Draft content, proofread, edit, and ensure consistent branding on letters, proposals, reports, and articles.
• Provide administrative support to Executive Director.
• Maintain development department electronic and paper files.
• Perform new funder research using various online resources (e.g., Foundation Directory Online).
• Research opportunities for YSI to be the beneficiary of third-party fundraising events and act as the YSI
liaison for such events.
• Prepare donor packets for donor meetings and maintain collateral materials.
• Provide fundraising reports to the YSI Board of Directors (attend YSI Board of Directors meetings, as necessary if requested by the Executive Director).

Support Donor Cultivation Activities (25%):
• Provide administrative support to multiple direct mail appeal campaigns and stewardship letters.
• Work with YSI staff and Board of Directors to plan and execute two donor cultivation events and one stewardship event annually and provide day-of-support.
• Make follow-up phone calls/send follow-up emails to donors, prospects, etc., as appropriate.
• Assist other staff in hosting corporate volunteer groups, when needed.

Qualifications (Required):
• Knowledge of and commitment to YSI’s mission and culture.
• Excellent writing capabilities. Ability to develop clear and concise communications.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Desire to learn all the facets of nonprofit fundraising.
• Proficiency with eTapestry and/or general database management. Ability to learn how to use eTapestry fundraising system.
• High-level of skill in Microsoft Office Suite and other standard office applications.
• Commitment to discretion, and ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
• Ability to perform simple accounting procedures.
• Skill in preparing written reports and presentations.
• Professional demeanor, flexible and able to respond to multiple demands.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Driver’s license and reliable transportation to Vasona park in Los Gatos.
• Occasional evening and weekend work.

Qualifications (Preferred):
• Tech savvy: experience with website and database maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a small, informal, action-oriented team.
• Creativity, flexibility, great sense of humor, and an enthusiastic approach to work.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, set priorities and meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
• Ability to relate in a highly professional manner to participants, donors, prospects, staff, volunteers, and vendors.

Location:
Youth Science Institute is in Los Gatos, CA, in Vasona Park. YSI’s site hosts a Nature Center that includes live animals. YSI also hosts a Nature Center in San Jose, CA, in Alum Rock Park and provides programs in Saratoga, CA, in Sanborn Park.

Physical Demands:
This position requires individuals to regularly sit, reach with their hands and arms, and occasionally lift 30 pounds. Work is mainly performed in an office setting on the computer.
