Immunization Policy

Safety and public health are priorities for YSI. California law requires children to be immunized and the American Academy of Pediatrics publishes a recommended immunization schedule for children each year. The routine vaccination of all children participating in YSI’s programs is an important public health matter especially in the interactive environment of a camp program where illnesses spread more easily.

All children attending YSI programs are required to have the following age-appropriate vaccines in accordance with California state law:

• Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus (DPT, Tdap)
• Polio
• Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
• Hepatitis B
• Varicella (chickenpox)

Vaccines are recommended for rotavirus, hepatitis A, influenza, and meningococcal disease, but are not required.

Under California law, a child may be exempt from immunization requirements only if a parent or guardian submits a written statement from a licensed physician that states: (1) that the physical condition or medical circumstances of the child are such that the required immunization(s) is not indicated, (2) which vaccines are being exempted, (3) whether the medical exemption is permanent or temporary, and (4) the expiration date if the exemption is temporary. To request an exception to this policy, YSI must receive the appropriate documentation signed by the child’s physician at the time the child’s application requests enrollment in the selected YSI program(s). This policy will be enforced in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws. If there are any questions about YSI’s Immunization Policy, please contact YSI’s Executive Director.
